#2 The Haunting (remake), 2million. (first
Week) |
|
9th of August 99 |
The Haunting proved once again that Special
FX are not where the scares are at. It plumeted to 8th position with 6.3
million on the weekend. Taking it's total gross to 77.2 million. Which is
less than TBWP. Also the film is yet to make it to its budget. But it will.

Spielberg has POLTERGEISTED "THE HAUNTING".
Remember last time Spileberg let some direct a film under his banner that
had ghosts in it. Well he has yet again stepped into re-arrange the work
and polish up some of Jan's work on "The Haunting". Reported on
several pages today including IMDB and CSO is the following... "Spielberg
was said to be so dissatisfied by Jan De Bonts intended first cut
of the film that he "loudly berated" the director as well as "ripped
him a new anatomy." Meanwhile, Marvin Levy, a DWorks marketing
executive told the column, "That doesn't sound like Steven. He doesn't
deal with people like that. He has respect for all filmmakers." Levy
did reveal though that Spielberg did get involved in reshooting of key scenes
as well as recutting others." Well aren't you glad you don't live
with him. I'd like to place my bets that Spielberg approached Jan in a condescending
way with comments more to the effect of "That's good but.. How about
you try it like this...". On Poltergeist.. I know Spielberg helped
out Tobe Hooper through a hard time in his life. I was just drawing on the
ghost comparison. |

The Haunting managed to grab first position
on the weekend taking 33 million. But I'm sure the next weekend may drop
by more than 50%, I'd guess it might drop 75%. |

Catherine Zeta Jone and Liam Neeson have both spoken out about "The Haunting" albeit prmotional ho-hum some
may find it interesting. Jones said "couldn't have been more charming.
I'd heard all these stories about him being more interested in the effects
than the actors, and I came on board prepared. But he was great with all
of us, and really went out of his way to cast it with actors who wouldn't
be happy just running around a house of horror. And he also was very open
to changes, so I was really impressed." she went on to say, "[The
Haunting is] gonna be really scary. It's not one of those teen-slasher-type
horror films that's full of jokes and winking at the audience. It's very
serious and it really gets to you." This is the basic kind of thing
you would expect and actor say, the film WILL be scary, it was GREAT to
work on... Neeson was more on the it was GREAt to work on vibe "In
a way, it was easier with The Haunting. There was very little blue screen
work I had to do, even though there are very extraordinary special effects.
It seemed like a walk in the park compared to shooting The Phantom Menace."

"The Haunting" has cost 73-75
million, the house set cost 8-10 million dollars to make. DeBont justifies
this by saying."[I]t is a lead in the movie," says De Bont.
"It's like you pay a big actor. Our production designer (Eugenio Zanetti)
designed this incredibly complex house. Nobody felt very at home on the
set. Nobody stayed there long after shooting was over. It wasn't scary during
the daylight scenes. When you light it really nice, it actually looks quite
beautiful. The moment you start taking the light away, it becomes very oppressive,
and the dark corners start (to look) like there are a lot of hidden secrets
in there." DeBont also went on about "The Haunting" to
say "a very original approach to the horror movie. It's not the
type of slasher (film) we've seen in the past couple years. It's much more
like an adult horror movie, which takes itself extremely serious, but at
the same time there's a lot of humor in it. It's more like the excitement
you have in movies like The Shining or Rosemary's Baby or The Exorcist,
where a lot of surprises happen." Another piece of commentary that
I found interesting, "When I heard DreamWorks was developing this
with Susan Arnold and Donna Roth, I thought this was great. I called them
right away (to say), 'This is the type of movie I would really like to direct.'
They got very excited by that. We met with Steven (Spielberg) and they said,
'Let's do it together.' And, of course, they wanted it right away!"

Here we go.. Quote of the day comes from the director of the NEW "The Hauinting" Jan De Pont "I want to
invigorate the genre with adult horror once again." he goes on "complex
visual and sound effects. That's how you scare people. We're manipulating
the imagination; connecting events in the mind with reality. Who you are
can be visualized in such a way that you can be made to believe what's inside
your mind."... Ha.. ha. I'm rolling around laughing.. The first version
had no complex visual effects.. And I am still scared after I sit down and
watch it today.. Even after about 12 times.. Also in this version the folks
go to Hill House for Dream Therapy. Go figure.. |

On the flip side of that "The Haunting"
remake went under the microscope of the LA times.. And it was drawing on
comparisons of the Robert Wise version.. Of which Jan De Bont are now trying
to defend their film from.. They have realized that the less is more effect
of the original is why it is so scary.. And have now chosen to play down
the CGI FX used in the movie as being "creepy".. After being on
Ghost tours
of Brisbane and the like I find myself creeped out by the possibility
and that strange noise in the back of Boggo Road Jail, E-Wing, or footsteps
on the gravel on the Backtrack.. Pity De Bont has only now realized it..
You may as well have made Poltergeist 4.. If this film doesn't make the
80million it costs.. Let that be a lesson to you from Robert Wise. See other
Haunting Stuff here. And have a refresh of the
original HERE!!. |

23rd of April 1999 |
New pictures have arrived about "The Haunting".
The film has a budget of 75 million and whopping 10 million has gone into
the pocket of "The actual House". Although this will have FX up
the wazoo. Expect the effects to be used in a similar way to "Event
Horizon" to work you up to a completely psychological schotzophrenia.

Jan De Bont has used the following explanation as to why CGI effects
will be used in the remake of "The Haunting"
(in comparison to the original CGI FX less scariest film of all time by
Robert Wise) this was posted on cinescape online-- "The old movie,
although I liked it, never did all the things the book [by Shirley Jackson]
could do," De Bont said. "Either at the time they didn't
have the money or the special effects, and maybe they didn't dare go that
far because it seemed too far-fetched." Well I say, the original
film was brilliant, and would top my list of scariest films of all time,
they should re-relase the old one with "NO CGI FX, 100% scares."
as the slogan. CGI has a place in cinema but it can be abused. |
